Brenda’s Wardrobe

Dogs look kinder when wearing clothes. I’m convinced of it. That’s why, on the first chilly fall day this year, I bought Brenda a new wardrobe. A few days earlier, Belisa presented Brenda with a new white terrycloth robe with red piping. It made Brenda look like a little boxer—the athlete not dog breed. I thought she must have more in her closet than a robe, so I went to the children’s department of Old Navy and bought her three T-shirts, size children’s 4. The red sweatshirt with “MVP—Most Valuable Princess” printed on it is my favorite, followed in a close second place by a green-and-pink striped shirt with “Sassy” on it. The third, which I like to put Brenda in when she’s getting ready for bed, has a purple-and-black paisley design. It’s very flattering. I also snagged a few Ts donated to our latest stoop sale. Just today she wore the “Fuck Yoga” one and maybe tomorrow I’ll dress her in the “I [heart] NYC” shirt.

Brenda also has a pair of sneakers that Stacy gave her in the height of her paw infections, a black faux fur coat that’s a hand-me-down from Porter, and a few T-shirts from American Apparel made especially for dogs that are shared by Porter. They’re in neutral colors.
