The first muzzle I bought Brenda was red with white flowers on it. Diffused the scary situation of walking around Manhattan with an aggressive, unpredictable pit bull. Then she chewed the strap into pieces. Ben mended it with a tiny sewing kit he brought home from a hotel in Aruba. Our last vacation.
When spring turned to summer I went on a hunt for a basket muzzle—the Hannibal Lector kin—so Brenda wouldn’t overheat. None of the boutique pet stores in my neighborhood, or in any neighborhood in NYC as far as I can tell, sell them. The clerk convinced me that one made of plastic mesh was as breathable. My main concern was Brenda’s comfort in the miserable July heat. I bought it.
Her third muzzle was bought by Ben, online after I had been complaining for days about how uncomfortable Brenda must be. This time it was a genuine Hannibal Lector muzzle and it came in the mail.
The first time I put it on her she ran into her crate and buried her head in her paws. Seconds later she emerged with a huge grin and the muzzle hanging around her neck. The strap was too big. We punched another hole. It fits now and she seems happier. She wears it when Ben is home and when we have guests, whether with two legs or four. The worst damage she can inflict is a bruise from barreling into your leg.
Last night the vet told us that Brenda is most likely allergic to plastic. She has been breaking out with acne under her chin and the first question we were asked was were we feeding her in a plastic dish. We were.
Her favorite muzzle is made of plastic.

Hey I'm glad your helping this poor innocent dog. Have you tried the Animal SPCA in your area for help with Brenda. I watch Animal Planet and they show the different SPCA's on that channel, they are a non profit organization that helps animals at no cost or low cost. JJ
Hi JJ, I haven't tried the ASPCA in NYC. There are so many dogs in need, and Brenda is such a special case. If she went anywhere else right now chances are she'd be euthanized on the spet. Only two people, myself and another woman who is helping me out, can get close to her right now. She is getting better, though. Sara
